Benefits of Exercise - Summary
In this series, we have seen evidence of many beneficial consequences of exercise - reduced risk of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and dementia. There are more potential benefits that are less easy to quantify - stress reduction and strengthening one's immune system. (See for example the Cleveland Clinic writeup on this issue).
The authors of reference 11 show results that running lowers the degree of clinical depression to a degree similar to that obtained with medication.
In conclusion, exercise and physical activity have a measurable impact on illnesses, as well as other tangible benefits on people's well-being. We don't have to be marathon runners to benefit from such activities - the studies show that moderate exercise is a good way to take care of one's self, decrease illness risk, and maintain a positive outlook on life!
