The Link Between Fruit, Vegetables and Health - Alzheimer's Disease
Data for this page is taken from reference 8.
The data was obtained from the Nurses Health Study. Over a six-year period, participants were tested for general cognition, verbal memory, category fluency, and attention. Two years later, 13,388 women who had provided dietary information received a followup test. Fruit and vegetable intake over a period of 11 to 17 years prior to the initial test was determined by a questionnaire.
The researchers did not find a significant connection between fruit intake and cognitive decline. However, women with the highest intake of vegetables had significantly less decline than those with the lowest intake. The difference between the highest and lowest quintiles of green leafy vegetables intake was equivalent to the mean difference they found for women about 2 years apart in age.
