Is Saturated Fat Really Bad For You? Summary
This review raises serious doubts, that parallel those raised by Cholesterol Skeptics. Here is what we know:
Replacing the intake of fats by carbohydrates has a detrimental effect on cholesterol and lipid levels in general
Saturated fats increase total cholesterol, but also increase HDL, the "good" cholesterol"
Epidemiologic studies, initially used to support the relationship between saturated fat and heart disease, are inconsistent
Individuals respond differently to changes in dietary carbohydrate and fat intake
In conclusion, changes in saturated fat intake may or may not help prevent heart disease. However, there are certain steps one can take that do prevent this deadly disease: eat a Mediterranean diet, exercise, work on stress reduction, try to achieve an optimistic point of view, and don't smoke!
